Kidarah Talks: Streets (Doja Cat Cover)

“Streets… OMG this track was SO much fun to make. I don’t think I’ve ever used my voice like this before. There is something about doing covers that makes it easy for me to play around with ideas and vocal techniques because I don’t feel as pressured. With my original music, I am super crazy about everything being perfect, which can sometimes put me in a metaphorical box. This beat on Doja Cat’s song went so hard, paired with her live milk bath video (which made it even harder) called my name and just allowed me to set myself free vocally on this track. The original lyrics and melodies on this track just spilled out of me in one take and that’s what I kept. I’ve never done anything like this before so it was all new territory, but I’ve been wanting to mess around with these deep vibez for a little while now.

The video was sooo fun to make too. I felt like using Doja’s live milk bath performance as inspiration made it really easy for me to then Unikorn it out with rainbow lighting and an edgy fit to go with it. Doing a black outfit paired with while eyeliner and eyelashes to contrast Doja’s white outfit and black eyeliner and lashes made this whole video a kind of message from me to my fans. It said ‘hey, I’ll do these covers, but I am NOT a cover artist, and I will always spill all of myself into everything I do. Doja is dope, but I had to rebel from her concept and flip things upside down so you know what’s really up with me.’ I’m definitely out here shouting out Doja with my SoundCloud artwork featuring my cat, Violet, but the root of the goal stays the same. If I am doing a cover, I am going to add my own twist to it. Since I’m a Unikorn it’s gotta feel like a Unikorn remade the song. I feel like this cover was a complete success in that way, so I’m super excited to play around with more covers in the future!”
